Adidas and Parley for the Oceans, an enterprise committed to decreasing plastic waste material in our oceans, have recently been working together on shoes made from plastic waste recycled from the ocean .
Last year, they 3D-printed a prototype, with the aim of showing the best way the whole footwear industry could very well “reconsider design and development and at the same time help to protect against ocean plastic pollution,” according to Adidas.
Right now they are producing actual physical pairs of Adidas shoes made from plastic waste readily available for you to purchase. Approximately 7,000 pairs of shoes made from plastic waste were sold at retail outlets and on the internet in 2017.
The athletic shoe has an “upper” constructed of 95% ocean plastic (scooped up around the Maldives), and the remainder of the shoe is created from mostly recycled materials as well. It’s named the “UltraBOOST Uncaged Parley.”
While only 7,000 pairs of shoes made from plastic waste have been sold so far, Adidas has significant goals for these kinds of shoes. “We will make one million pairs of shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic in 2017 – and our ultimate ambition is to eliminate virgin plastic from our supply chain,” the company said, according to The Verge.
